![]() twelve new songs from the former member of Tiger Trap, the Softies, and Go Sailor Rose Melberg has always been a productive overachiever - giving us a seemingly endless avalanche of mellifluous albums to treasure - but the past 5 years have been uncharacter-istically quiet. After moving to a small Canadian lakeside town, she started a family, developed into a mature singer/songwriter akin to Nick Drake, Tracey Thorn, and Elliott Smith, and created her solo masterpiece, "Cast Away the Clouds", the beautiful continuation of an impressive career. "Cast Away The Clouds" is finally available in a vinyl edition (limited to 500) thanks to our friends at Where It's At Is Where You Are (UK). It includes the bonus track "The Time Has Come" (a cover of Anne Briggs) and a big insert with all the lyrics. We have some for sale here, and they are absolutely beautiful, so get em while they last! Elle Magazine "Best of the Month" ...the second solo effort from riot-grrrl-turned-mom... made primarily with her guitar and winter-to-spring voice, it's a beautifully hushed and spare record.
New York Times There are echoes of Elliott Smith in the major-to-minor turns of the songs and the intimate mix, but without his self-loathing. While Ms. Melberg's songs are full of breakups and goodbyes, she is never bereft. "I've suffered greater sorrow than just being left alone," she sings, and leaves it at that. Bust Magazine ...strikingly mature and mellow... evokes gentle rainstorms and lazy afternoons at the local coffee shop. New York Post ...the female equivalent of Nick Drake. Pitchfork April showers bring May flowers, but they're all weeds compared to the sonic fragrance of Miss Rose Melberg. more the-N.com Softest, prettiest, pastel-iest, lullaby-iest voice ever. Might be good for people who: are heartbroken, get really quiet when they get upset (instead of loud), or are into Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and '90s Twee. Vice Magazine ...sounds like an angel. Big Takeover The songs come from a quiet, lonely position: Each one is addressed to a far-off other, often to someone who could be, would have been, should have been, or was, a lover. It's a gorgeous collection of bittersweet, ruminative songs. Dagger Rose is looked upon as sort of a pop goddess through her work with Tiger Trap and The Softies (Go Sailor, too) and... she's still got it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Lost At Sea Rose Melberg's second solo release forever marks the truly everlasting ability she has to resonate in hearts and minds through song. Her transcendence - her way of showing her heart truly bare - is enthralling in its earnest nature. more Urban Pollution The press one-sheet for Cast Away cites a maturation for Melberg, likening her music to songwriter luminaries such as Nick Drake. And they couldn't be more right. Melberg has shifted to a more serious sound that does recall the aforementioned songwriter, making good use of flats, sevenths, and thirds that provide a gravity to the songs not often seen in her previous work. more TrebleZine Rose has crafted the most honest and delicate release of her prolific career. Equal parts confessional and melancholy, Cast Away The Clouds sparkles with an immediacy that few singer-songwriters are able to capture so completely. more CokeMachineGlow track review 'Take Some Time' doesn't just meet my already sky-high expectations... it tears them into multicolored gossamer ribbons and ties them up in a neat bow. more Slightly Confusing to a Stranger It's said that time heals all wounds, but I'd reckon to say that a good dose of Rose Melberg might speed the process along--a salve that can (and should) be applied directly and repeated often. more
